Data from the "Panorama of Rio de Janeiro Startups" shows that the average revenue is R$ 8,8 million - Disclosure
The city of Rio de Janeiro has approximately 600 startups, which are projected to have a total revenue of R$ 5,3 billion in 2025, equivalent to about 1,3% of the city's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This represents an average revenue of R$ 8,8 million. The data comes from the study "Panorama das Startups Cariocas" (Overview of Rio de Janeiro Startups), prepared by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE) and Riotur, in partnership with Maravalley, the city's innovation hub. The survey was developed based on data from the Zoox Eye platform, which specializes in analyzing the city's startup ecosystem.
The research also estimates that startups in Rio de Janeiro generate employment for approximately 14,4 workers, with an average of 23,7 employees per company. Most of these companies operate in the sectors of Information Technology, Education, Health and Wellness, Management and Consulting, and Socio-environmental Impact. The neighborhoods with the highest concentration of startups are Centro, Barra da Tijuca, Botafogo, Santo Cristo, and Ipanema.
The numbers reveal the growing maturity of Rio's innovation ecosystem. Startups already represent an important economic force for the city, contributing to the diversification of productive activity and the creation of opportunities – emphasizes the municipal secretary of Economic Development of Rio, Osmar Lima.
In terms of size, 44,7% of startups are micro-enterprises, 35,7% are small businesses, and 19,7% are medium or large. On average, these companies have been in operation for 7,1 years and have a share capital of R$ 85,5. According to the study, there is also a geographical concentration of startups around Maravalley, with an approximate distance of 8,8 kilometers between them. The majority of them, 39,7%, are located within a radius of up to five kilometers from the hub, and 71,9% are less than ten kilometers away.
The results reinforce Maravalley's relevance as a catalyst for innovation in Rio. The proximity between startups, universities, investors, and large companies strengthens the connections necessary to accelerate the development of new businesses – points out the CEO of Porto Maravalley, Daniel Barros.
The survey was launched during the fourth edition of Web Summit Rio, held between June 8th and 11th at Riocentro. The event has the potential to generate an economic impact of R$ 219,1 million on the city's economy in 2026. Furthermore, Web Summit Rio is already guaranteed to remain in Rio de Janeiro until at least 2030. Considering the eight editions planned between 2023 and 2030, the accumulated economic impact could reach R$ 1,9 billion (approximately US$370 million), with a total audience exceeding one million participants, reinforcing Rio's position as the Capital of Major Events.
Events like Web Summit Rio increase the city's international visibility and create concrete opportunities for business, investment, and innovation. The economic legacy generated goes far beyond the days of the event – highlights the president of Riotur, Bernardo Fellows.
